About Diatomite
About Diatomite — Our Story
Diatomite was founded with a simple conviction: your bathroom deserves better than a soggy, bacteria-ridden fabric mat that needs replacing every year. We set out to bring one of nature's most remarkable minerals — diatomite — from the labs of material scientists into everyday homes.
Why Diatomite?
Diatomaceous earth (diatomite) has been studied by materials scientists for decades for its extraordinary porosity and rapid moisture absorption. When our founding team — including environmental scientists and product designers based in Europe — first encountered diatomite bath mat prototypes, the results were immediate and undeniable: a dry mat in under 30 minutes, zero mold growth after months of daily use, and a surface that never needed machine washing.
We spent two years refining the product: testing different diatomite densities, perfecting non-slip rubber backing materials, and running long-term durability trials. The result is a bath mat engineered to outperform cotton, microfiber, and memory foam on every measure that matters.
Our Expertise
Our team draws on backgrounds in environmental science, material engineering, and sustainable product design. We work exclusively with diatomite sourced from certified mining operations that meet EU and US environmental standards. Every mat is tested for amorphous silica content to confirm it meets food-grade safety thresholds established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
We are active contributors to research on mineral-based home goods and regularly consult academic literature — including peer-reviewed studies on diatomite's absorption kinetics and antimicrobial properties — to inform our product development.
Our Commitment
- No microplastics. Unlike polyester and microfiber mats, our diatomite products shed zero synthetic fibers into your home or water supply.
- No chemicals. No antimicrobial coatings, no flame retardants, no VOC-emitting adhesives. The mat is diatomite, a backing, and nothing else.
- Transparent sourcing. We disclose the origin of our diatomite and the specifications of every material used in our products.
- Long-term value. We sell products designed to last 3–5 years — not consumables that need quarterly replacement.
